Video Response - February 1st

In my video response, I chose to do the first option.  When I started my first semsester at Lewis I was not sure what to expect.  I took five classes and I was failing one of them after three weeks into the class.  My professor tried to convince to drop the class but instead I decided to try my best to pass.  It was a wake up call because I had never had trouble with any of my classes in the past.  I started taking better notes and asking questions in class.  At the end of the semester I not only passed the class, but I recieved a "B" in the course.

We know through painful experience that freedrom....

I chose to do a passage-based focused free write on the first paragraph on the second page of "A Letter From Birmingham City Jail.  MLK mentions in this paragraph that freedom is never voluntary and it must be demanded.  I think that he says this in his letter for two reasons.  MLK wants African Americans to realized that their freedom will not be handed to them and that they will need to demand by nonviolent protests and demonstrations.  The other reason behind that statement is that MLK is telling the "oppressors" that they are demanding their freedom now and they are done "waiting".  I like how MLK says in his letter that the oppressor's answer for their request for true equality is "wait".  Over the years, this has almost always meant "never".  I think that saying "wait" is the oldest trick in the book and is another way to delay something in hope that the issue goes away.  People do this all the time to avoid change or conflict.  However, I think MLK makes it clear that there is no more waiting.  They are done being told to "wait" and the time for equality is NOW.

• Simple Sentence - We have reminded them of the circumstances of our emigration and settlement here.

• Compound Sentence - He has erected a multitude of New Offices, and sent hither swarms of Officers to harass our people, and eat our their substances.

• Complex - He has refused his Assent to Laws, the most wholesome and necessary for the public good.

• Compound/Complex - He has forbidden his Governors to pass Laws of immediate and pressing importance, unless suspended in their operation till his Assent should be obtained; and when so suspended, he has utterly neglected to attend to them.
